The Orgasol® and Rilsan® D products provide a multitude of benefits to solvent borne, aqueous, and UV coating formulations. The best fit, from a technical and commercial perspective, is situations when the formulator wants to improve two or more coating performance parameters.

In this section, the focus is on the use of these materials to improve abrasion and scratch resistance.

The Abrasion and Scratch Resistance of a 100% solids UV Formulation

The Orgasol® products improve abrasion and scratch resistance of coatings because the products are thermoplastic.  In the first graph, Taber abrasion test results are provided for formulations containing an Orgasol® product and competitive coating additive technologies.  The formulation with the 5% loading of Orgasol® 2001 UD Nat 1 provides the best Taber abrasion the performance.  A similar result is obtained when evaluating scratch resistance as measured by scratch depth.  The scratch depth of the formulation containing 5% Orgasol® 2001 UD Nat 1 is smallest, compared to the other additive options.

The Abrasion Resistance of a Wood Coating with Orgasol® Powder Additives

This graph provides the abrasion resistance improvement for an aqueous wood coating using 0.75% loading of Orgasol® 2001 EXD (10 micron diameter) and Orgasol® 2001 UD Nat 1 (5 micron diameter).  The study indicates there is an improvement in abrasion and scratch performance in a formulation, no matter the ratio of the of the dry film thickness (DFT):Orgasol® powder diameter.  This is unlike the use of the Orgasol® technology for gloss control where it is important that the DFT:Orgasol® powder ratio is close to 1:1, meaning the diameter of the Orgasol® product is roughly the same as the DFT.

Formulation: Waterborne polyurethane acrylic dispersion

Coating Thickness: 50 microns

Orgasol® powder partice size: 5 and 10 microns.
