What is Polyimide?

Polyimide (PI) is a unique family of ultra-high-temperature polymers containing imide linkage. PI has gained recognition for its material performance properties required for the highest demanding environments such as dimensional stability, heat resistance, chemical resistance, and electrical insulation. PI can withstand extreme temperatures ranging from near -270℃ to above 400℃. Polyimide plays a crucial role in the electronics and aerospace industry because of its dimensional stability, electrical properties, and flexibility. By integrating advanced polyimide materials into their core, industries are accelerating into the future, crafting technology that not only meets the demands of today but also tomorrow.

Frequently Asked Questions About Polyimide Material (FAQ)

Polyimides are a family of polymers and much like other polymer families, properties vary based on the monomers which comprise the polymer. Depending on the application, variants are engineered to provide range of thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties. Advanced formulations also can offer color control, enhanced flexibility and low dissipation factor, making them suitable for use in electronics, aerospace structures, and automotive systems.

Polyimide materials are available in several forms to meet diverse applications, including films, fibers, foams, coatings, resins, and varnishes. Being available in a wide range of form factors enables engineers to deploy an ultra high performance polyimide polymer in a range of applications and environments. PI Advanced Materials, an Arkema affiliate, provides high-performance polyimide films, varnishes and stock shapes.

Polyimide is produced through a multi-step chemical process involving the polymerization of dianhydrides and diamines to form a precursor (polyamic acid), which is then thermally or chemically imidized.

Depending on the end-use applications, this process is adapted to manufacture different product forms: films are typically produced via casting and controlled thermal imidization, varnishes are formulated as liquid polyamic acid solutions for coatings and adhesives, and stock shapes (such as rods or plates) are created through molding or machining techniques from fully cured polyimide resins.

Polyamide and polyimide differ primarily in their chemical structure and resulting in chemical resistance. Polyamides contain amide linkages which give properties that are suitable for key applications such as automotive or industrial applications. In contrast, polyimides are built with imide rings in their backbone, providing exceptional chemical stability and resistance to solvents, oxidation, and radiation.

This advanced molecular structure gives polyimides inherently excellent thermal and chemical durability, enabling them to maintain integrity in aggressive environments where stability at the molecular level is critical.
