Together with Air Liquide, Arkema has achieved a major advancement in hydrogen pressure vessel technology using bio-based Rilsan® PA11. Derived from castor oil, this polymer combines a low carbon footprint, excellent hydrogen barrier properties, minimal water uptake, and high ductility ideal for the liner, the vessel’s hydrogen containment layer.

To strengthen the structure, Arkema developed UDX® PA11 tapes, composed of continuous carbon fibers impregnated with PA11 and optimized for processability and mechanical performance. Their perfect compatibility with the PA11 liner enables a monolithic all-PA11 tank design, improving safety (preventing liner collapse), performance, and recyclability at end-of-life. This integrated solution sets a new benchmark for sustainable, high-performance hydrogen mobility.

Rilsan® Polyamide 11 for Hydrogen Tank Liners and Hydrogen Fuel Lines

The excellent intrinsic resistance of Rilsan® Polyamide 11 to low temperatures explains its effectiveness as a sealing layer for hydrogen tanks, the key component to ensure safe hydrogen storage in FCEV vehicles. Hydrogen tanks undergo enormous variations in internal pressure, and Rilsan® Polyamide 11 has been proven to resist crack and blister formation during compression and decompression. In addition, Rilsan® Polyamide 11 is extremely lightweight, which is ideal for vehicle manufacturers who are always looking to reduce weight. Another key advantage of Rilsan® Polyamide 11 is its ease of processing. Whether it’s rotomolding, blow extrusion, injection molding and welding, or extrusion, there is a suitable grade of Rilsan® Polyamide 11. This high-performance polyamide is not only useful for onboard fuel tanks but can also be used in hydrogen supply infrastructure such as fueling stations.

The requirements for producing hydrogen lines and connectors are very similar to those for traditional fuel lines in internal combustion vehicles. Since plastic parts are mainly located under the chassis, they are exposed to harsh outdoor environments such as road salts and gravel, and Rilsan® Polyamide 11 has proven its worth in fuel line applications thanks to its excellent chemical resistance and mechanical properties such as impact, temperature, and pressure resistance. It also offers outstanding barrier properties compared to other thermoplastics.

Elium® resins, now available with recycled content

Arkema launched new Elium® resins using recycled contents that increase sustainability of composites parts.

A first generation of Elium® containing at least 18% recycled resin is already available for the most requested grades, and a formulation with 92% recycled materials is currently being tested.

The properties of these new grades remain unchanged compared to existing resins: processing characteristics, manufacturing parameters, and composite performance. The difference lies in the reduced environmental impact of the finished parts and increasingly durable composites thanks to this new resin.

Elium® is a unique composite manufacturing solution that allows the use of the same tools and methods as those used for standard liquid resins, with the added advantage of making them thermoplastic and recyclable. Elium® composite parts, as well as production waste, can be recycled through depolymerization or mechanical recycling.

UDX® PA11 & UDX® PPA – High-Performance Thermoplastic Composite Solutions

UDX® PA11: Lightweight, Resilient, and Sustainable


UDX® PA11 unidirectional tapes, made of carbon fibers impregnated with thermoplastic resins, are designed for demanding applications in sports, leisure, transportation, and industry. Based on 100% bio-sourced and recyclable polyamide 11, they offer a unique balance of lightness, stiffness, and responsiveness, combined with excellent impact resistance, low moisture uptake, and stable performance at low temperatures. Ideal for full composite parts or localized reinforcements integrated into existing processes (injection, thermoforming, overmolding), they are commonly used in rackets, frames, reinforced footwear, and bindings. They also suit hydrogen storage applications, including pressure or cryogenic liquid tanks combined with PA11 liners for gas transportation and storage.
Key benefits: lightweight and high stiffness, responsiveness and impact resistance, bio-sourced and recyclable, low moisture absorption, and maintained performance at low temperatures.

UDX® PPA: High Temperature and Robustness


For hot and humid environments, UDX® PPA tapes based on Rilsan® Matrix (PPA) provide a high glass transition temperature (150°C) to withstand heat and self-heating during fast hydrogen tank filling, a low melting point (260°C) for easier processing, and low moisture uptake for dimensional stability. Applications include high-pressure hydrogen tanks, rotor and stator sleeves for electric motors, and automotive components exposed to thermal and chemical stress.
Why choose UDX® PPA: biobased and recyclable thermoplastic technology, carbon fiber for maximum rigidity, and solutions compatible with existing industrial processes.

Zenimid® Polyimides – Advanced Solutions for Composites Including Release Film and Vacuum Bag

Arkema’s ultra–high-performance Zenimid® polyimides, developed through PI Advanced Materials, offer a robust solution for composite technologies across aerospace, automotive, electronics, and industrial markets. Their core strengths include Ultra‑wide thermal range: stable from nearly –270 °C to over 400 °C , exceptional dimensional control, flexibility, and durability even in extreme environments, High chemical and flame resistance, combined with strong electrical insulation properties . Zenimid® polyimides grades are available as Films (4 µm to 160 µm+), and barrier layers, as Varnishes, designed for electrical insulation in semiconductors and e‑motors, Powder with thermal, dimensional, and abrasion resistance, well-suited for high-stress composite structures. Zenimid® polyimides empower composite manufacturers with materials that are engineered for the most demanding conditions, providing unmatched performance, versatility, and innovation for JEC-level impact.

Reinforce the thoughness of your system:

 

The Clearstrength® XT MBS coreshell toughening agent enables a wide formulation versatility for the main types of matrixes on the market. The Sartomer® liquid urethane (meth)acrylate oligomers can also be introduced in the matrix to fine tune the mechanical properties.
 
The Orgasol® ultra fine polyamide powders are particularly adapted to epoxy matrix, and highly efficient thanks to their spherical shape combined with a narrow particle size distribution.

The nanostructured acrylic block copolymers Nanostrength® act as additives at the very heart of the material. They help enhance the impact resistance of the matrix with no loss of module or temperature stability. They can be used both in epoxy or vinyl ester composite matrices and in structural adhesives.

Graphistrength® carbon nanotubes significantly improve the mechanical strength of composites. They also prevent the build-up of electric charges in the resulting components.


 
Control the rheology of your composite:
Plastistrength® (meth)acrylic copolymers allow the viscosity control of (meth)acrylic and epoxy resins at low dosage.
 
Lower VOCs of your matrix with specialty crosslinkers:
Sartomer® monomers, are crosslinkers of choice for polyester, (meth)acrylic and epoxy matrixes. Those reactive diluents reduce VOCs, enhance mechanical properties and drive conversion while controlling the viscosity of the overall system. Some of those methacrylate monomers are also biobased, with bio contents above 25%.
 
Initiate polymerization efficiently:
Luperox® and Retic® organic peroxides answer your curing challenges with grades tailored to room temperature or elevated temperature polymerization. They are fine-tuned for thermosetting resins.

Sartomer® photoinitiators come in handy for hybrid systems involving a UV or LED curing step.

Smart Adhesives
 

Bostik will reveal its adhesive solutions for composite parts including its structural MMA (SAF&FIT range), its instant adhesives (Born2Bond™) and its sealants (SMP and extended range). During the JEC, you will also find our new Pliogrip™ range (2k-polyurethane and 2k-epoxy) with a focus our safer low monomer polyurethane adhesives Pliogrip™ 3540 (no mandatory training – REACH 74 regulation).
 

Bostik will present its Prep DB primer, a major innovation that addresses the critical challenges of repair and recycling at the end of a vehicle's life. Developed as part of an open innovation strategy, it uses thermal activation to break the bond between the adhesive and the substrate, making it possible to disassemble components without damaging the surrounding materials.

Piezotech®, electroactive polymers for high-tech applications

We at Arkema are leaders in the production of a range of electroactive polymers: Piezotech®. These materials offer endless possibilities by enabling motion or thermal energy conversion into electricity and vice versa with the intrinsic advantages of polymers: processability, flexibility, lightness & low cost.
 
Those polymers have remarkable potential for monitoring the structural health of composites like hydrogen tanks, wind turbine blades etc.: high sensitivity to acoustic waves, deformation, and temperature. They are used in acoustic detection to identify cracks, impacts or in ultrasonic sensors to generate waves and then detect the differences in propagation, thus allowing a fine analysis of the structure.
Compared to standard piezoelectric ceramics, sensors based on Piezotech® can be mounted on curved surfaces because they are flexible. Also, due to their polymeric nature, they can be integrated into the core of composite like tanks and can be printed on large surfaces. The absence of toxic and non-recyclable heavy metals, their light weight and low energy consumption make them the materials of choice for the intelligent composites of tomorrow.
